Chapter 12

The following afternoon, Brett sat in a wheelchair in a private flight terminal gazing at Scotty who sat slumped in a chair on the other side of the room. “She’s not sitting with me, but she hasn’t called me a stubborn asshole for over an hour. I think I’m on my way to forgiveness.”

“Maybe, or it’s the muscle relaxer I gave her.” Mark smiled at Brett. “She had some anxiety about flying so I helped her out.” He looked over at Alex and Cass who were seated on a sofa together laughing hysterically. “I didn’t do that though. Their relaxation came from vodka, and quite likely, marijuana, but I have no idea where they got it. Did you take a pain pill?”

“No, I’m grunting it out.”

“Brett, you know about pressure and flying. You may experience—”

“Oh, believe me, Dr. Terrell gave me a long speech about flying.” Brett pulled a bottle from the pack that sat in her lap and took a pill. Mark handed her a bottle of water and she drank some. “Last one. I’m tired of feeling fuzzy.”

“Wise choice,” Mark said. “Daniel has arranged for an attendant to be with you on your trip home, so at least, someone without a fuzzy brain will be able to help you if you need it.”

“Any more news on the crash investigation?”

“No. I’ve been talking mainly with my insurance company. They’ve decided they need copies of some documents stored at my house in New York. They’ll just have to wait for me to get there by car because there is no muscle relaxer or drug strong enough to get me back on a plane.” Mark ran his hand over the New York Giants jersey he was wearing. “Is this me?”

Brett shook her head. “Not even a little.”

“But I like it. I’ll save the sport coats for New York. While I’m in Montana, I’ll get in touch with my casual side. You certainly look comfortable casual in those yoga pants and that…is that a cotton dress?”

“It’s an oversized T-shirt,” Brett said, staring at Mark as though he was crazy. “When have you ever seen me wear a dress?”

“This experience has been life-altering. The girls aren’t verbally assailing one another. You’re smiling more than I’ve ever seen since I met you. I’m falling in love with sports apparel, so I don’t think my question was all that bizarre.” Mark gazed at Scotty. “I wonder how her life has been altered. I suppose, time will tell about what I’ve witnessed budding between you and her.”

“I think your intuition was damaged in the crash.”

Mark chuckled. “You don’t need intuition where she’s concerned. It’s obvious she has feelings for you. She simply needs time to sort them out for herself. The greatest love of my life claimed to be a confident heterosexual when he first came to my house—this was long before I met you. He was an electrician, one of those roughneck, strong types, and he’d heard that I was gay from one of the other contractors working on my remodel.
